What “Zero Sugar” Really Means

(And why it matters when hydration is meant to support your body)

An overhead view of various artificial sweetener packets including brands like NutraSweet, Splenda, Sweet'N Low, and Stevia scattered on a blue wooden surface with text overlay reading "What 'Zero Sugar' Really Means."

You’ve probably seen the hype
“Zero Sugar.” “Zero Calories.”

It sounds ideal.
Clean. Light. Better-for-you.

But what does “zero sugar” actually mean — especially when it comes to hydration?

“Zero Sugar” Usually Doesn’t Mean Unsweetened

In most hydration mixes, “zero sugar” means this:

👉 Sugar has been replaced with highly processed sweeteners.

Many of these sweeteners start in nature — a leaf (stevia/rebaudioside A) or a fruit (monk fruit/luo han guo) — but by the time they reach your water bottle, they’ve been extracted, isolated, refined, and chemically altered.

In most cases, they’re also blended with erythritol as a bulking agent, without erythritol being listed as a separate ingredient.

Natural origin doesn’t guarantee transparency. And it doesn’t always mean gentle on your body.

That’s why we’re keepin' it real.

The Problem with So-Called “Zero-Calorie” Sweeteners

These sweeteners are often hundreds of times sweeter than sugar — and that intensity can come with trade-offs.

Many people experience:

  • Bloating or gas
  • Digestive discomfort
  • Bladder irritation (especially common in women — meaning more unexpected trips to the ladies’ room)
  • An overly fake or metallic sweetness
  • A bad aftertaste

Not ideal when hydration needs to work with your body.
Your body knows when something isn’t right.

The Brain–Body Mismatch

When your brain tastes sweet, but your body receives no real nourishment, it can create confusion — the result of zero-calorie tricks.

That disconnect may:

  • Trigger sugar cravings
  • Increase desire for salty snacks
  • Leave you feeling oddly unsatisfied

Instead of supporting your body, the drink can end up doing the opposite.
That’s why we believe in no artificial anything — no tricks, no shortcuts.

Workouts, Tennis / Pickleball & Whenever You Need Fuel for Your Fitness

This difference becomes especially clear during physical activity — whether you’re in a
workout, on the tennis or pickleball court, or fueling up to get moving.

When you’re moving and sweating:

  • Your digestive system is under stress
  • Your body wants fluid and electrolytes, not exaggerated sweetness
At that point, hydration shouldn’t: It should:
❌ Taste overly sweet
❌ Upset your stomach
❌ Leave a bad aftertaste
✅ Taste light and refreshing
✅ Be easy to drink when you need it
✅ Support endurance, focus, and recovery

When hydration is done right, you barely notice it — you just keep going.
