What’s the Skinny on GLP-1?

What they are, are they safe, and what your body actually needs

What’s the Skinny on GLP-1?

GLP-1 medications are everywhere right now.

From headlines to conversations on the tennis court—or around the mahjong table—it feels like everyone is talking about them… or taking them.

It’s easy to start wondering… am I the only one who isn’t?

Especially when you see friends who are suddenly a skinnier version of themselves and think, “Wait… what? Should I be on that too?”

So let’s cut through the noise.

What is GLP-1?

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1—a hormone your body already makes.

It helps regulate:

  • Blood sugar
  • Appetite
  • Digestion

Medications like:

  • Ozempic
  • Wegovy
  • Mounjaro

mimic this hormone—but in a stronger, longer-lasting way.

They:

  • Reduce appetite
  • Slow digestion
  • Help regulate blood sugar
  • Support weight loss

Originally developed for Type 2 Diabetes,
they’re now widely used for weight management.

Are they safe?

For some people, under medical supervision, they may be an appropriate option—but they’re not without risks, and we still don’t fully know the long-term effects.

Because you can’t completely outsmart the body. When we start overriding its natural signals, we don’t always know what the long-term impact will be.

Common short-term side effects:

These happen because digestion slows down.

Less common but more serious risks:
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas that can cause severe abdominal pain)
  • Gallbladder issues
  • Kidney stress (especially with dehydration)
  • Possible thyroid tumor risk (seen in animal studies; still being studied in humans)

It’s rare—affecting a small percentage of people—but it does happen, and it can be serious.

There’s also a growing trend of people experimenting with compounds sourced online—often without medical guidance—which adds another layer of uncertainty and risk.

The long-term question

We don’t yet have decades of data for widespread weight-loss use—and there are still important questions about long-term metabolic effects, nutrient balance, and what happens after stopping.

Many people regain weight when they stop.

We also don’t fully know the long-term impact of consistently telling the body to slow or override its natural digestive signals.

For some, this may feel reminiscent of the phen-fen era—the last “magic bullet” that was pulled from the market due to serious heart-related side effects—a reminder that when something sounds too good to be true, it’s worth looking beyond quick results and considering the unknowns around long-term health.

So… is it right for you?

Everyone’s body, needs, and health history are different. If you’re considering taking anything, it’s always worth talking with your doctor.

In summary

You can’t completely outsmart the body.
Quick solutions can come with real trade-offs.
And not everything being promoted is well understood—or safe.
