Walk down the hydration aisle and it’s hard to miss: electric blue powders, bright pink sticks, neon yellow drinks.

They look fun and exciting.

But here’s the question:
why does your hydration need to look — or taste — like candy?

The most common artificial food dyes in electrolyte drinks

Many sports drinks, hydration powders, and flavored beverages use synthetic food dyes to create those bright, bold colors.

Blue 1 (Brilliant Blue FCF)

Often used in:

  • blue raspberry
  • glacier / icy flavors
  • berry blends
  • tropical flavors
Red 40 (Allura Red AC)

Common in:

  • fruit punch
  • strawberry
  • cherry
  • watermelon
Yellow 5 (Tartrazine)

Used in:

  • orange flavors
Yellow 6 (Sunset Yellow)

Often found in:

  • orange
  • mango
  • peach shades
Blue 2 (Indigotine)

Used in:

  • darker blue drinks
  • purple blends
Red 3

Less common today, but still used in some products:

  • bright red
  • pink-toned beverages

What are artificial dyes, really?

Many artificial food dyes used in drinks today are synthetic color additives made from petroleum-based chemicals. Historically, some early synthetic dyes were first developed from coal tar derivatives, but modern food dyes are primarily petroleum-derived.

These dyes are added to:

  • make products look brighter
  • create stronger flavor associations (“blue should taste icy”)
  • improve shelf appeal
  • keep products looking consistent over time

But here’s the key:
they add color — not nutrition.


What’s changing

Regulators are taking a closer look at synthetic dyes — but many of these ingredients are still widely used today.

Red No. 3

In January 2025, the FDA revoked approval for Red No. 3 in foods and ingested drugs after animal studies raised safety concerns. Manufacturers have until January 2027 to remove it from food products.

That means products containing Red No. 3 may still be on shelves during the transition.

Other petroleum-based dyes

In April 2025, the FDA announced plans to phase out six commonly used petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the U.S. food supply, including:

  • Red 40
  • Yellow 5
  • Yellow 6
  • Blue 1
  • Blue 2
  • Green 3

These ingredients are still commonly found in products today while regulatory changes and reformulations take time.

For many consumers, that’s one more reason to read labels carefully and choose products made with ingredients they feel good about.


It’s not just the color

For many people, the concern isn’t just one ingredient — it’s the overall additive load.

Some electrolyte drinks contain a long list of extras, including:

  • synthetic food dyes
  • artificial or ambiguous “natural flavors”
  • non-nutritive, or “zero-calorie” sweeteners
  • acids, fillers, and stabilizers

Each ingredient may be approved for use and generally recognized as safe (GRAS) within established limits. But many consumers are paying closer attention to the cumulative effect of multiple additives in the diet.


Why some people are concerned

Artificial dyes and other non-essential additives have become a growing concern for many consumers.

Research has explored possible links between:

  • synthetic colors such as Red 40 and Yellow 5 and increased hyperactivity or behavioral changes in some sensitive children
  • allergic or hypersensitivity reactions in certain individuals
  • artificial sweeteners and individual sensitivity, appetite regulation, or gut health

Not everyone reacts the same way, and the science is still evolving. But for many families, these concerns are enough to make them think twice about products loaded with unnecessary extras.

As Dr. Mark Hyman says, “There’s no reason we should be consuming these things” when referring to artificial sweeteners, food dyes, and other industrial additives in ultra-processed foods.

He often describes these products as “food-like substances” rather than real food — products engineered for shelf life, appearance, and taste, rather than nourishment.


The combination may matter even more

Each of these ingredients may raise concerns on their own — but together, they can create a double whammy for consumers trying to avoid unnecessary additives.

More researchers are now looking at how combinations of additives may affect health, because people consume ingredients together, not one at a time.

A recent large observational study found that certain additive combinations commonly found in ultra-processed foods were associated with higher health risks than would be expected from looking at individual ingredients alone.
